PACOIMA — Day of Remembrance will be observed on Sunday, Feb. 16, from1 to 4 p.m. in Sakaguchi Hall at the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center, 12953 Branford St., Pacoima.
DOR is an exploration of Executive Order 9066, signed on Feb. 19, 1942, and its impact on the Japanese American community. Attendees will discover more about this tragic time in American history through exhibits and “café-style” conversations with honored guests.
The documentary “The Manzanar Fishing Club” will be screened with director/producer Cory Shiozaki as guest speaker.
Shiozaki is a Vietnam veteran who retired after 40 years as a cameraman with the International Cinematographers guild. His notable credits include films like “Back to the Future,” “The Terminator,” “Training Day” and “Dances with Wolves” as well as a plethora of television shows.
He is probably best known for the award-winning “Manzanar Fishing Club,” which was screened before members of Congress on Capitol Hill in July 2012 and received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition. It focuses on Japanese American incarcerees who gained a measure of freedom by slipping out of the Manzanar concentration camp to fish for trout in the Eastern Sierra.
