The Grateful Crane Ensemble will bring classic Japanese children’s stories to life on stage on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, 244 S. San Pedro St. in Little Tokyo.
In “Saru to Kani” (“The Monkey and the Crab”), a greedy monkey finds out what happens when he eats too many persimmons.
In “Tsuru no Ongaeshi” (“The Grateful Crane”), an old man and his wife are blessed with a daughter, but find out she’s much more than that.
In “Urashimataro,” a sea turtle takes a young fisherman on a wondrous ride to the bottom of the sea, where he meets a beautiful princess who gives him a magic box. But whatever you do, do not open that box!
Presented for the young and young at heart, these stories — as well as Japanese children’s songs and children’s “book songs” by Grateful Crane’s musical director Scott Nagatani — will take you on a delightful journey of storytelling, music and song that promises to be fun for the entire family.
Ticket are $5 for children, $10 for adults. The 45-minute show is appropriate for ages 6-12. Reservations required; pay at the door. Box office opens one hour before showtime. To make a reservation, call the JACCC at (213) 628-2725.
