“Man from Reno,” a murder mystery set in the Bay Area, will open on Friday, March 27, at Laemmle’s Playhouse 7, 673 E. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena, as well as at the Laemmle Royal in West Los Angeles.

The film will also open on Friday, April 3, at the AMC Rolling Hills 20, 2591 Airport Dr. in Torrance (with Japanese subtitles) and Edwards University Town Center 6, 4245 Campus Dr. in Irvine; on Friday, April 10, at the Sundance Kabuki Cinema, 1881 Post St. in San Francisco; and Friday, April 24, at Digital Gym, 2921 El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego.

Presented by Tiger Industry Films and Eleven Arts, “Man from Reno” won the Best Narrative Feature award at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival Best and was a John Cassavetes Award nominee at the 2015 Independent Spirit Awards.

In a small town south of San Francisco, Sheriff Paul Del Moral is driving home through the fog one night when he accidentally strikes a pedestrian, a lone Japanese man. However, before an investigation can take place, the man disappears from the hospital without a trace.

At the same time, Japanese mystery author Aki Akahori takes a trip to San Francisco in order to escape the press tour for her latest book —?a potboiler in her world-famous “Inspector Takabe” series. Feeling lonely and vulnerable, she begins a romantic affair with a mysterious Japanese traveler from Reno who is staying in the same hotel.

Her new lover, Akira Suzuki, is charismatic and charming, but abruptly disappears from the hotel, leaving behind his suitcase and a trail of questions.

Directed by Dave Boyle (“White on Rice,” “Surrogate Valentine”), “Man from Reno” stars Ayako Fujitani (“Tokyo!”), Pepe Serna (“Scarface”) and Kazuki Kitamura (“The Raid 2,” “Kill Bill”). It is produced by Ko Mori and co-written by Boyle, Joel Clark and Michael Lerman
