The Los Angeles Day of Remembrance (DOR) Committee announced that the annual DOR will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m.
As the usual host location, the Japanese American National Museum, is closed for renovation, the event has been moved to Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple or Nishi Betsuin, 815 First St. (at Vignes Street) in Little Tokyo.
DOR commemorates the signing of Executive Order 9066 on Feb. 19, 1942, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The order authorized the U.S. military to remove persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast and set into motion their incarceration into concentration camps during World War II.
This year’s theme, “A Legacy of Courage: Nikkei Women Persevering Through Incarceration and Beyond,” is meant to highlight the stories told and untold of Nikkei women who persevered through the incarceration and their determination to rebuild and thrive afterwards. It explores the lasting impact of their experiences and celebrates their contributions to the Japanese American community and culture despite countless hardships.
The program will feature a discussion between Nikkei women of various generations as well as honoring and remembering women leaders throughout the history of the Japanese American community. More details on the program and speakers will be announced closer to the date.
The Los Angeles DOR Committee is a coalition of organizations, including Go For Broke National Education Center, Japanese American Citizens League-Pacific Southwest District, Japanese American National Museum, Little Tokyo Service Center, Manzanar Committee, Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress, Nikkei Progressives, and Organization of Chinese Americans-Greater Los Angeles.
