GARDENA — Playwright Tim Toyama will show “Day of Independence,” a 26-minute film adapted in 2003 from his play “Independence Day,” on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m. at Merit Park Recreation Hall, 58 Merit Park Dr., Gardena. All are welcome.
The play and film are based on the World War II experience of Toyama’s father in an American incarceration camp. The film was directed by Chris Tashima (“Visas and Virtue”) and stars Derek Mio, Marcus Toji, Alan Muraoka, Keiko Kawashima and Tashima.
After the show, Toyama and Naomi Yoshida, costume designer, will talk about the production of the film.
