GARDENA — On Sunday, May 29, at 1:30 p.m., the Okinawa Association of America (OAA) in Gardena will host an event focusing on health and longevity in Okinawa.
The presentation will be in English and Japanese. RSVP is required.
Titled “Back to the Origin: Nuchi Gusui and Okinawan Longevity,” the talk is based on Okinawan practices like “nuchi gusui” (food as medicine) and “hachi hachi bu” (eating until you’re 80 percent full) as well the lecturer’s own research and interviews with Okinawan elders.
Guest lecturer Noriko Shimoji Cuaron is a registered nurse with a master’s degree in public health. She and the Okinawa Prefectural College of Nursing are currently coordinating a nurses gathering at this year’s Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival (Oct. 26 to 30 in Naha, Okinawa).
Shimoji Cuaron will also moderate a short discussion with elder OAA members about how they stay healthy and active.
This event is part of an ongoing series of educational programs at the OAA. Admission is free for current OAA members and $5 for non-members. To RSVP, email [email protected] or call (310) 532-1929.
The OAA is located at 16500 S. Western Ave. The event will be held in the Yamauchi Building.
